How do you Size a Recirculating Chiller?
What laboratories, plastics, lasers, semiconductors, medical, pharmaceutical, extraction, chemical and many more industries have in common is that they all require a recirculating chiller at some point in the production process. Determining the size of the recirculating chiller you need is as simple as following a formula. Even non-experts can do it as long as you have some facts.
There is a single and easy-to-follow formula for sizing the chiller you need. However, before you start, you must understand a few factors:
- Inlet water temperature
- the water temperature you need
- flow
General size formula:
1. Calculate the temperature difference ΔT°F = inlet water temperature (°F) – desired cooling water temperature
2. Calculate BTU/hour. British thermal unit/hour. = gallons/hour x 8.33 x ΔT°F
3. Calculate tons of cooling capacity tons = BTU/hr ÷ 12,000
4. Oversize the chiller by 20% Ideal size (tons) = tons x 1.2
5. You have the ideal size for your needs
For example, what size recirculating chiller would be needed to cool a 10 GPM from 72°F to 58°F?
1. ΔT°F = 72°F – 58°F = 14°F
2. British thermal units/hour. = 10 gpm x 60 x 8.33 x 14°F = 69,972 BTU/hour.
3. Ton capacity = 69,972 BTU/hour ÷ 12,000 = 5.831 tons
4. Extra Large Chiller = 5.831 x 1.2 = 6.9972
5. Requires 6.9972 or 7 ton chiller
