Selection Method of Water Chiller System

Step 1: Determine Heat Load
It is important to determine the heat load of your application to ensure that the selected chiller is large enough for the actual application. There are several ways to determine heat load (in kW), and understanding the process helps to calculate an accurate heat load.

Step 2: Determine Coolant Type, Temperature and Flow Rate
Once the heat load is known, the next step is to determine the coolant, target temperature, and flow rate the chiller must provide to the process. This can be determined by the amount of heat the process delivers to the coolant and the type of coolant used. For example, water has different properties than oil.

Step 3: Determine the installation environment
What kind of environment should the chiller system be installed in? For example, indoor applications can experience high temperatures and dirty air, while outdoor installations can experience low and high ambient temperatures. This will affect the selection of the chiller and will require accessories such as air filters and tank heaters.

Step 4: Use the Chiller Performance Chart
Now use the available chiller performance charts to select a chiller model that meets or exceeds the required cooling capacity based on chilled water supply temperature and maximum expected ambient air temperature. Safety margins should be considered for available sizes to maximize the value of chiller selection.

Step 5: Check the Pump Performance Chart
Check with us on the pump’s performance chart to ensure that the pump can increase the pressure enough at the design flow rate to meet the application requirements. Some liquid cooling systems have small coolant flow paths or long distances, and the average pressure loss may be higher.

Step 6: Final Selection
Finally, consider the remaining application requirements, such as power characteristics, control selection, footprint, proxy list, colors, etc. for the selected chiller. Choosing a standard chiller increases reliability and makes servicing easier with universal spare parts and global support.
