How to solve ice blockage in a 5 ton chiller?

The appearance of ice blockage in LC -25°C ~ -5°C Low Temperature Chillers is due to the excessive water content in the system, which freezes and blocks fine channels at the inlet of expansion valves/capillaries and evaporators, resulting in low pressure or negative pressure, poor refrigeration performance of the entire machine, and even non refrigeration.


Moreover, the electrical load of the compressor is low. As long as there are weak or no echoes inside the expansion valve/capillary, the evaporator does not frost, and the outlet and condenser of the compressor are not hot. It takes a long time for the ice blockage to self melt and pass through, but after a period of circulation, ice blockage will occur again. This phenomenon of ice blockage often occurs at the outlet of the capillary tube and the inlet of the evaporator.

The water in the Freon refrigeration system of industrial chillers mainly comes from the following situations:

1. Low pressure part leaks air, entering the air when the pressure is lower than the local atmospheric pressure;

2. Freon is impure and rich in water.

3. The manufacturer of the chiller believes that after the system is installed, the internal air is not exhausted and there is water stored;


4. Entering air during maintenance of industrial chillers and fluorine filling;

Entering the drying filter together, due to the high viscosity of the oil, it is blocked by the desiccant inside the filter. When there is too much oil, it forms a blockage at the inlet of the filter, preventing the refrigerant from circulating normally.

There is too much residual refrigerant oil in the refrigeration system, which affects the refrigeration effect and even cannot cool. Therefore, it is necessary to clean the refrigerant oil in the system.

Treatment method for oil blockage: When the filter is blocked with oil, a new filter should be replaced. At the same time, high-pressure nitrogen should be used to blow out some of the refrigerant oil accumulated in the condenser. It is best to use an electric hair dryer to heat the condenser when nitrogen is introduced.

The lubricating oil that has not been separated will enter the system and flow with the refrigerant in the pipe, forming an oil circulation. There is still a fundamental difference between oil film and oil blockage.


The ice jam fault is mainly caused by the excessive water contained in the refrigeration system. With the continuous circulation of refrigerant, the water in the refrigeration system gradually concentrates at the outlet of the throttle valve. Since the temperature at the outlet of the throttle valve is the lowest, the water forms ice and gradually increases. When the temperature reaches a certain degree, the capillary tube is completely blocked, and the refrigerant cannot be circulated.

The ice blockage fault in the refrigeration system is due to excessive moisture in the system, so the entire refrigeration system must be dried. The processing methods include the following:

Vacuumize, replace the dry and dry filter, and wait until the moisture indicator in the refrigeration system’s sight glass turns green to indicate compliance;

If there is a large amount of water entering the system, it is necessary to use nitrogen to wash the dirt in sections, replace the filter, replace the refrigerant, replace the refrigerant, and vacuum until the water indicator in the sight glass turns green.
